Values and Frameworks

The Birth Justice Origins Project is built on ten core values that guide our work and advocacy. These values are informed by a range of frameworks and cultural influences—from Black feminism to Pan-Africanism and Healing Justice. Explore each value and learn how these frameworks inspire and shape the movement for birth justice

Cultural Reclamation

Honoring and reclaiming traditional Black midwifery practices that have been marginalized by systemic oppression.

Community Empowerment

Ensuring that birthing individuals have autonomy and are supported by their communities throughout their pregnancy and birthing experience.

Accessibility to Care

Advocating for equitable access to quality healthcare, regardless of economic status, race, or geography.

Anti-Racism

Combating systemic racism in healthcare and supporting anti racist policies that ensure all birthing individuals are treated with dignity.

Holistic Wellness

Addressing not only physical health but also mental, emotional, and spiritual well being throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Intersectionality

Recognizing how intersecting identities (race, gender, class) affect experiences of birthing and ensuring those at the margins receive focused advocacy.

Restorative Justice

Repairing harms done to Black birthing communities through reparative policies and support mechanisms.

Pan-African Solidarity

Building connections with birth workers and communities across the African diaspora to share knowledge and practices.

Healing Justice

Creating supportive spaces where birthing individuals can heal from trauma and adverse experiences, including medical trauma.

Collective Liberation

Understanding that birth justice is part of the broader fight for freedom and liberation of all oppressed communities.
